Dr Javad Mottaghi, Secretary-General of the ABU
Dr Javad Mottaghi assumed office as Secretary-General of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) in May 2010. Before joining the ABU, he was Director of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) for 12 years. He has 39 years of national and international experience in media/communication, international partnership, media development, ICTs, capacity building, networking, research, negotiations, fund raising, news and programming for radio and television, social and cultural television programmes and sports coverage.
Dr Mottaghi was awarded Elizabeth R Award for Exceptional Contribution to Public Service Broadcasting. He has received “Special Lifetime Achievement Award “in May 2010 in recognition of his contribution towards the Asia – Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD);
Dr. Mottaghi is a Member of the Board for the World Radio & Television Council (WRTVC) since 2001, Associate Member of “The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in New York” since December 2002, a Member of the Standardization Committee for ISAS BC 9001 and ISO 9001, a Member of The International Academy of Television and Radio in Russia since December 2002, a Board Member of the World Summit on Media for Children Foundation (WSMC) and a Member of the International Advisory Board of the Prix Jeunesse, a professional German based organization, which deals with quality TV programmes for Children. He has been closely working with all regional broadcasting unions.
In his previous positions, Dr Mottaghi served Iran’s national broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in various capacities in the field of sports, culture and production.
Other previous responsibilities in his dossier includes ; Vice Minister of the Sports for Sports Federations (1989-1992), Deputy to President of the National Olympic Committee of Iran in international Affairs, 1979, Chairman of the Technical Swimming Committee for the Asian Amateur Swimming Federation, (1980-1981), Secretary–General of the Iranian Swimming Federation (1982-1998).
He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Teesside in England. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tehran Sharif University of Technology
